Representations and Realities of American Women in the War Effort
This slide show presentation examines the role of women in wartime, offering a selection of images that suggest the realities of women workers in the war effort as well as the ways American women were represented in propaganda images of the period. From depictions of Lady Liberty imploring Americans to conserve food during World War I to the real and imaginary "Rosie the Riveters" of World War II, representations of American women both served a symbolic function and highlighted the crucial contributions of working women to the war efforts of the twentieth century.

Hello Girls Answer Uncle Sam’s Call
Coined as the Hello Girls as early as the late 19th century, female telephone switchboard operators were widely known as having gentle and polite voices regardless of demanding and impatient callers. During World War I, French-speaking Hello Girls were enlisted to improve wartime communication, transmitting crucial information over a battlefield phone system to troops on the front lines.
