The Dies Committee
Wait till the Dies Committee Hears about This! drawing by Herbert Block, December 1938
In this satire of the Dies Committee, cartoonist Herbert Block showed how Santa Claus could plausibly be viewed as an international agent engaged in subversive activities. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin later employed many of the House committee’s tactics, such as high-pressure interrogations of witnesses, during his Senate investigations of alleged communist sympathizers in the early 1950s.

Congressman Martin Dies Goes to Hollywood
On a 1939 trip to Los Angeles, Chairman Martin Dies announced plans that the House Special Committee to Investigate Un-American Activities would conduct investigations into subversive behavior on the West Coast. Dies, at a luncheon hosted by 20th Century Fox Studios, is seated between studio executives Joseph Schenck (left) and Darryl Zanuck (right). The Committee, precursor to the House Un-American Activities Committee, focused on combating the infiltration of un-American ideologies into society from the late 1930s to the mid-1940s.
